I spotted this on Facebook Marketplace after being reduced to £5, I normally wouldn't bother paying any money for old desktop PC's, I normally see them being given away for free minus the hard disc. But I saw in the ad it had a 250GB SSD installed, so it was worth the £5 just for that
And here it is, it's an HP Pro 3405 MT, it has an AMD processor, I don't understand AMD processor naming conventions, but I believe it's somewhere around the time of the second generation Intel i3 processors
This PC is not in it's original configuration as shown by the SSD, it did come with a fresh install of Windows 10 installed, and it has 8GB RAM
Nothing special about the sides other than a deep scratch on one side
Gloss black front panel which shows all the dust and fingerprints. The power button is at the top along with the disc access LED
DVI and VGA are your display options, along with four USB 2.0, Ethernet, and audio
The Crucial 250GB SSD which has been installed with the utmost care
Various parts of the inside showing four PCIe slots and four SATA connections, along with the 2x 4GB RAM modules
This PC originally shipped with Windows 7 installed, although it had 10 installed when I picked it up (Not for long though)
Two more USB 2.0 sockets, a card reader, and more audio sockets. And a multi format DVD burner with Lightscribe
First thing I did was to wipe the SSD and put the latest Linux Mint on it
Here are the specs Linux Mint reports
And for some reason the PC doesn't shut down, even during a reboot it just stops at this screen needing the power button to be held down to continue. I haven't looked into this enough to fix it yet, it did this with Windows 10 as well, so it's not a Linux problem
Anyway this PC, despite not being Windows 11 compatible (says Microsoft), runs the Latest Linux Mint just fine, so there's no need to throw out you old PC just yet, just come over to the dark side...
