ITT
SL 59 automatic

I got this cassette recorder with my Acorn Electron, it's a shoebox style cassette recorder as was the style at the time, but slightly wider. It was released in 1979 and has all the usual features you would expect for the time, like auto stop, built-in microphone, headphone out and microphone in through a DIN connector. It can be powered by the mains through a normal C7 (figure-8) lead, or by five C cells.
The automatic in the name probably refers to the auto stop feature

It has alternative tape transport names, CASS is eject, START is play, etc. It's nice the record button is a different colour to the others, you'd be hard pressed to push it by accident. The volume control is on the top of the unit, this was clearly a cassette recorder designed for use with computers.

All the connections to the computer are handled by a DIN socket on the rear of the unit, which meant it was perfect for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron as you could use a normal 5 pin DIN to DIN lead which came out the back, along with the power cord, so would look neater on the desk, not like those other shoebox cassette recorders where all the leads come out the sides.
If you didn't have a BBC or Acorn machine you could get a DIN to two 3.5mm plugs to use with other computers of the era, like the good old Sinclair Spectrum or Sinclair ZX81
