Atari
800 XL

I have recently acquired an Atari 800XL, it is one of the many Atari 8 bit machines, and it was the follow up (and cost reduced version) to the original Atari 800 but with 64K of RAM, and a slightly fuzzier video output. My Atari 65XE is the follow-up machine to this

I had rubbish lighting when I took these pictures, so they do look a bit yellow

It's a medium sized machine, a bit thinner than a Commodore Breadbin machine, but similar other dimensions, it has a decent keyboard, and silver function keys down the right hand side with a red power LED underneath, there's also a cartridge port underneath two metal flaps, and a rather understated Atari 800 XL badge.
On the bottom is some vents, and the model label

The rear of the machine has the Peripherals socket (looks like a SIO port), Parallel bus expansion, Monitor, Switch box (RF), Power in (DC), and the power switch. The power plug is a 7 pin DIN and has three separate +5V and ground connections, whether this is to do with sharing the current the machine draws over six pins or not, I don't know

The right hand side of the machine has two Atari standard joystick ports

The two metal flaps reveal a cartridge port that looks like the Atari 2600 cartridge port

The PSU is a large heavy brick, I tested the voltages and they are all within spec, so good to go...

I'll just check the plug first, lucky I did

Smoke test, and it boots fine, I'll run the usual BASIC programme. The video output looks fuzzy, but it's via RF and it always looks fuzzy on this TV

Typing BYE gets you out of BASIC and into the self test programme

The memory test passed

The sound test passed too, and so did the keyboard, although I didn't get a picture

This photo I took earlier in the kitchen is more representative of the colour, rather than the photos above
